Talking Last Thursday's flight report! Eric P.

When I found out our HO in Canada were going to be chasing chocolate eggs and drink beek in the 500 000 square feet building in the afternoon last Thursday, I decided I was going to chase thermals instead! I got to Wesmar at about 1 PM, the wind sock was pointing almost straight along the long runway with wind blowing about 12 mph coming from the West. http://www.flickr.com/photos/11886640@N03/3439260179/ Looking up, you can tell clouds were trying to form, things were looking good with XC skies predicting 400-500 fpm up! I knew the drift would be pretty strong, figured I should try for an up-wind XC and back but when I got to about 2000', winds were defenitively stronger, more like 20 MPH! It took me a while to find decent lift, nothing was collected, but managed to not use power in the so so conditions. Clouds never really formed in the area, I could see a few but were way far. Then Bang!... I hit an 850 FPM up thermal to 6000'. Needless to say, for every 360 I made, I was getting further and further from Wesmar. I'd been in rocky conditions before, this had to be the most turbulance I've been in for sure! Kept the speed up! Eee Hah! I noticed God was forming a cloud right above my head so that I can go XC, far away! At that moment, my XC instinct was screeming go man, go for it! My conscience on the other hand was screeming don't be stupid, who's gona pick you up? I even started to run names through my head, John A. was the first one that came up! (no kidding)! With some internal battle, I opted for what seemed right at the time, head to Wesmar! Looking down on planet earth I could notice I didn't have much forward motion, looking on my GPS, I would read about 10 mph, that confirmed I had a good 22-25 Head wind! I kept the engine idling the hole flight ...just in case! I headed straight towards Wesmar, then found some lift above the river, not much but enough to make over the field with about 800 feet to waste. Landing was a breeze. I seriously didn't think I would make it back! Once landed, I could still see the one cloud that had developed over my head and continued to grow. I wonder where my flight would have ended would have I opted to go the other way? The day was almost perfect! I got into my truck to move it closer to the glider and a horrible smell took me by surprise, looked down to notice I had Major Dog Poop all over my shoes, pants, car matts and later found out I stepped over my straps keeping my glider in place on the roof rack! Shit!!! For a good laugh, click here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/11886640@N03/3439263569/ Oh well! Might have been the price for playing hookie! Eric

So the next time someone says "It was a sh**ty day" we shouldn't automatically assume the flying was bad.

Any idea how far downwind you were when you decided to go back to Wesmar?

Mark

Not far Mark. Looking at my GPS, about 4.5 miles. There was big sink once I left the cloud as expected! Again, 22-25 MPH head wind!

The river? Howclose were you to rickenbacker?
Either way nice flight! A 6000 day is always a good day.
Though I thought for sure the first name for retrieve would have been melanie. Wait... She doesn't read this stuff, does she?
If you ever want to swap the skeeter for a kidney I might be game.
Once again nice flight.

I was about 7.2 miles away from Rickenbaker to the South West. Near intersection of Route 104 and 316 towards South Bloomfield.
