Default My OHF Hat Went 19.5 Miles on Valentine's Day - Video

I never fly without my OHF hat and sometimes I even wear the T-shirt too. I zip my hat into my harness after I get my cover bag stowed. Saturday, was no exception and it was the official beginning of XC season in Santa Barbara. I captured most of my 19.5 mile flight on video, with separate stereo voice recording. The first 2 parts are on youTube and the 3rd should be loaded over night, tonight. Enjoy! - Jonathan

Hi Jonathan!
Nice video, you really put a lot of effort into these.

I always enjoy watching your videos, as for someone who hasn't thermalled yet it is a great tool or introduction to what it's like and what one should do and expect. I hope you're worth learning from, and I won't pick up anything from you I might regret later, haha :-)

Congrats on a nice flight and thank you for posting!

I just produce what I what to watch myself. If it was already available, I'd be watching more and editing less.

For lessons about thermalling, I really like these books

I'm about 2/3rd the way thru The Secrets of Champions. I'm bouncing between it, Understanding the Sky, and the advanced HG Manual. I should be full of it by the time flying season starts!

That doesn't help ME unless YOU start making videos or giving lectures. :D

Default Watching The Video

I have a dual monitor setup so I downloaded your track to Google Earth and then started the videos. Cool to watch where you are and then what you're actually doing.

It's sure gorgeous along the Santa Barbara coast! Great time of year to be along there when everything's green.

That's a great idea about running GE on a 2nd monitor! This was my 2nd flight ever at SB and I was so preoccupied between going XC and trying to catch up with the lead pilot and with the video and narration that it caused me to bomb out earlier than I should have and I barely got to enjoy the view. So I ahve to rely on the video for that oddly enough.

Later I played my igc file with Southside's igc file on SeeYou and was able to see what I had done well and where I dropped the ball. Southside has been flying SB for ~15 years, and really knows it well.

There is a nifty peice of shareware that allows you to play back the entire flight from the pilot's perspective in GE: http://ywtw.de/igcsimen.html

Cheers, Jonathan

Default Flying Together

Holy @$%^&!!!

I just landed with you next to the road running along the lake. WOWwee! what a fantastic piece of software, IGC Flight Replay. I couldn't believe the resolution. Pretty soon you'll be able to wave at people in these replays, see the cars driving by on the ground, see the bird that flew with you.

I could even watch your "vario" go up and down, turn my head left and right, monitor your time.

I'm impressed with that software...yeah, and a decent flight too.

To convert GPS formats like Garmin GPX to IGC, use GPSBabel, http://www.gpsbabel.org/
